Gang is Telugu dubbed version of ‘Thaana Serndha Kootam’. Starring Suriya, Keerthy Suresh and Ramya Krishna in lead roles the film is remake of Akshay Kumar starrer Hindi film ‘Special 26’. Let us see what Gang is all about.
Gang Story:
Suriya aspires to become a CBI officer. It is also his father’s dream to see him as CBI officer as he works as a peon in the same office. Suriya passes written exam but corrupt higher officials demand bribe during interview. At the same time, his close friend who aspires to become a police also meets same fate and commits suicide. Disheartened with corrupt system, Suriya forms his own CBI team and starts raiding big shots and businesses. Jhansi (Ramya Krishna) joins him in this mission.
Gang Review:
Gang is a crime thriller set in 1987 period. It is remake of Special 26 which is said to be made based on true incidents. Director Vignesh Shivn makes honest and faithful remake. Only climax has been altered from the original. Story moves at snail pace. Lethargic narration plays spoilsport. The story is dragged like a chewing gum. The plot revolves in a loop giving a sense of déjà vu. With repeated scenes it appears like beating around the bush. Director fails to adopt the story to South sensibilities and present it with entertainment. Moreover, makers seem to have taken Telugu audience for granted. Tamil flavor is seen in every single frame and even signboards are not second half is even more burden to bear.
Performances:
Gang movie’s only saving grace is Suriya, he looked a dapper. His stylish performance makes the film somewhat watchable. Keerthy Suresh is gorgeous as a traditional girl but she doesn’t have any scope in the film. Ramya Krishna is decent in funny role as a fake CBI officer.
Technically:
Background score by Anirudh is average. Chitika song alone is good but not a single word in the song can be understood. Cinematography is good giving a periodic feel. Art department has to be commended for recreating 1987 era. Director disappoints with his narration and presentation.
Bottom-line: Only Suriya stands-out in this Gang
Suriya’s Gang which is Telugu version of Thaana Serndha Kootam disappoints. Gang has no entertainment. Tamil essence comedy doesn’t appeal to Telugu audience.
